Pella Corporation designs and manufactures made-to-order custom windows and doors along with behind-the-glass blinds and shades for a myriad of homes and businesses.

Founded in 1925 in Pella, Iowa, the company employs over 6,000 workers at 14 manufacturing locations across the United States. The company has received nine ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Awards and five distinctions for sustained excellence.

Produce High-Fidelity, High-Performance Labels

The Eclipse DocOrigin enterprise software application is an innovative and intuitive software solution for designing and generating dynamic business documents, forms and labels. The software makes use of open technology to produce high-fidelity, high-performance labels and works seamlessly with Pella’s line of business software.

Not only was DocOrigin able to handle Pella’s existing needs, but it also turned out to be more efficient and easier to customize. Pella’s previous solution required the company to compile multiple IFDs (a propriety Adobe Central input format) for all of the different printers to establish the print files. With DocOrigin, Pella modifies a single PRT file to set up all of the printer parameters, instead of compiling multiple form templates as previously required, to accomplish the same task.

Mission-Critical Labels

Printing labels is a mission-critical operation across Pella’s plant floors. The company creates labels that are as custom as the products they produce, so they needed to have the ability to design a label of any dimension at any time. Pella reached out to Eclipse Corporation to learn more about their DocOrigin software application. Eclipse was established by members of the development team who pioneered automated document generation with Adobe Central. With over 25 years in the documentation generation business, the Eclipse team has intimate knowledge of the products and a keen understanding of the mission-critical role that labels play in operations. With this type of company pedigree, it was clear to Pella that Eclipse had the required experience and understood their unique business requirements.

The Solution

Streamlining the Printing Process

Not only was DocOrigin able to handle Pella’s existing needs, but it also turned out to be more efficient and easier to customize. Pella’s previous solution required the company to compile multiple IFDs (a propriety Adobe Central input format) for all of the different printers to establish the print files. With DocOrigin, Pella modifies a single PRT file to set up all of the printer parameters, instead of compiling multiple form templates as previously required, to accomplish the same task.

Backward Compatibility

Pella has hundreds of Zebra printers installed throughout their factories and replacing those models was not an option. “As far as I can remember back, we’ve had Zebra printers at Pella,” says Postma. The fact that there is a dedicated Zebra ZPL print driver available within DocOrigin meant Pella could keep using their existing printers. “The driver in DocOrigin drives the Zebra printers at full speed, which is crucial for a company that labels everything coming off an assembly line,” explains Steve Brown, account manager at Eclipse Corporation. Pella can also use DocOrigin to design and generate the Zebra labels, so if Pella’s needs expand beyond labeling, they can use the software solution across their entire enterprise – from the corporate office to the plant floor.

Seamless Integration

At the heart of the DocOrigin system is the Merge engine that sits beside the existing ERP application. The Merge engine takes data coming out of the ERP system, interprets it, merges the data into the suitable label and then sends it to the appropriate printer. While the printer is preloaded with labels, the Merge engine ensures the right data gets to the correct label. “We’re an independent application, and we have something that’s called Integration Without Modification™ which means we can take the data stream coming out of the ERP system and handle it without the ERP application needing to be modified – which is a big deal,” notes Eclipse’s Brown. This also meant that migration to the new system wouldn’t adversely affect productivity. Instead, since DocOrigin can support so many different file formats and provides one environment for designing and distributing labels, it’s much more efficient. The configuration also translates into savings since Pella won’t have to request modifications or changes. “We liked the development tool to build the label template on a desktop and publish it up to the server. In that regard, we’re excited to switch to DocOrigin and use its desktop solution to build a template,” adds Pella’s Postma. “It provides a lot of flexibility to work with our existing fleet of printers.”

At A Glance

Seamlessly integrates with Pella’s ERP system

Maintains high-volume output without incident

Works flawlessly with all vintages of Zebra printers

  • DocOrigin and the team at Eclipse help us implement a system to manage generating over 20,000 labels a day and print them across a large network of printers. Their team was with us every step of the way to ensure success and really came through as problems arose.

Aperam has a highly integrated distribution, processing, and services network and a unique capability to produce stainless and special steels from low-cost biomass (charcoal made from its own FSC-certified forestry).

They sell products to customers in over 40 countries, including customers in the aerospace, automotive, catering, construction, household appliances, electrical engineering, industrial processes, medical, and oil and gas sectors.

Aperam sought to manage the editions of its business documents, including bills, delivery vouchers, purchase orders, and labels.

For the migration of the obsolete Adobe Central solution, Aperam was looking for a modern editorial solution with the following capabilities:

  • Migrate the existing templates in (JetForm) Central at a low cost.
  • Digest the data in its current Field Nominated format.
  • Allow a gradual transition to the new solution without any negative impact on the existing document output applications.
  • Provide multilingual support to maintain and enhance their Internationalization of the documents.
  • Meet the changing needs of the printing architecture for XML integration.
  • Integrate with the e-commerce e-Aperam site.
The Solution

DocOrigin is as robust and dependable as Adobe Central, yet more efficient, faster, easier to work with, and is in tune with today’s document requirements.

The developers’ extensive history with forms and document production enables them to get Aperam converted to DocOrigin quickly and effectively.

Existing Template Migration

DocOrigin’s conversion tool allowed Aperam to directly import their existing Adobe Output files (IFDs) with 90-99% accuracy rate. The conversion tool retains all objects, including graphics, text labels, fields, pages, barcodes, and more. Subforms are automatically converted to panes along with the Header and Footer associations.

Data-Driven Document Assembly

Now, optional sections instantiate automatically by incoming data elements, thus, simplifying Aperam’s development by eliminating Preamble Events for Field Used or Field Not Available.

Powerful and Intuitive Design

Since the DocOrigin solution was built by the founders of the Adobe Central solution, training the Aperam development team was effortless. DocOrigin Design follows the same robust, dynamic document assembly but simplified the complex functions in Adobe Output Designer. For example, in DocOrigin Design, content boundaries are defined with a visual container, eliminating the need to calculate reserve space, mark print positions, or script OnBOF (On Bottom of Form) preamble events. Pagination is effortless with automatic page overflow, page numbering, and page count, thus, eliminating complex trace files with duplicate merge runs.

Support for Existing Field Nominated File Data (FNF)

Aperam can continue to use their existing, field nominated data files since DocOrigin automatically converts them to XML, thus, further supporting Aperam’s gradual migration requirement.

Multilingual Support

The DocOrigin Auto Translate feature allows the static text of their form template to be switched from one language to another dynamically. This feature met the multilingual requirements and reduced the template development and maintenance costs since Aperam no longer required a template for each language.

Gradual Migration Support

Aperam runs their current Adobe Central solution in parallel with DocOrigin, allowing them to move new documents into production at their own pace. As a result, Aperam avoids the pressure and risks associated with “flipping the switch” and provides a backup for issues overlooked during Quality Assurance. DocOrigin automatically deciphers the appropriate application for processing incoming data files based on the installed template files.

The Solution

The Result of Integrating DocOrigin with Advantage 360 Solutions

DocOrigin was integrated into all products of Advantage 360 to improve business processes, by making them more efficient with speed, accuracy, agility and reliability. Every customer interaction is a new opportunity. Integrating DocOrigin with Advantage 360 telecom solutions allowed companies to speak to their subscribers as individuals in a single voice when and how they want it.

Speedy Deployment and Tight System Integration

Most telecom companies can not afford breakdowns in their document creation and delivery processes, and for some it might mean putting millions of dollars at risk—such as when statements are not sent out on time due to production errors. DocOrigin allowed Advantage 360 customers to easily migrate all of their document templates automatically, and send out critical business documents through a variety of supported delivery channels, securing a smooth production, even at peak times.

Gaining Agility By Creating Clarity From Complexity

Many organizations employ five, ten or even more communication systems, each handling only a specific document, channel or product, creating a disjointed customer experience. With DocOrigin, Advantage 360 customers can develop personalized and dynamic documents in batch and on-demand mode with the most sophisticated composition requirements, from one user friendly design interface, no matter what the delivery channel is. The solution offers convenient drag and drop tools, graphic objects, row/column objects, charts, barcodes and many more objects for designing the bill, which can be efficiently handled by any of the authorized business users.

Confidentlyl Sending Multichannel Communications

DocOrigin takes inputs from all Advantage 360 enterprise applications to generate documents, forms and labels in different formats. Further, the created documents are sent through print, fax, sms, customer portal, email or different channels based on customer preference. Group printing of business documents, like bills can also be done based on preferences and business rules.

Generating Documents in Real Time

If, for example, the subscribers find inconsistencies in their monthly bill, the telecom company can erase the saved bill data and generate an original bill. This functionality can be used by customer support representatives, telecom outlets and other customer facing business users.

Growing Team Work Efficiency

The combination of Advanced 360 and DocOrigin combines robust data and customer analytics with automated, dynamic, multichannel delivery. By incorporating customer intelligence with data streams, composition engines, print stream engineering, content designers, digital archiving, content management marketing and other business systems, customer support teams of telecom companies are now able to create more engaging customer experiences, by enjoying much more flexibility and access.

Communications for Every Step of the Customer Journey

By integrating DocOrigin as the single document management engine, Advantage 360 was able to open new opportunities for their customers. Advantage 360 now offers their customers the opportunity to build relationships with their subscribers at every touchpoint by consistently reaching each of them with the right message at the right time, winning their attention, hearts and minds. Not only are Advantage 360 customers now able to produce multiple communications from one document source, but all of their communications are consistent, up-to-date, compliant, and relevant to their end customer’s needs. Also, the new combination allows strategic planning and engagement of customers at every stage of their journey automatically.

Switching From “Running Marketing Campaigns” to “Always-On Marketing“ Mode

Advantage 360 customers can now use transaction, demographic, service usage history, location and behavioral data to make service suggestions and present targeted offers. They can move away from a campaign-focused mode and reach a wider audience with more relevant and dynamic messaging at lower costs. Also, after implementing DocOrigin, Advantage 360 customers started to create customer-friendly bills, and explain service usage history of complicated tariffs, like the telecom family tariff, by using smart and dynamic charts. This way, the telecom provider can ensure that every touchpoint with their customers is better measured, monitored and managed.

Reducing Costs and Going Green

Advantage 360 telecom customers are now able to speak to subscribers in their preferred communication channel, making it inviting to choose digital. Flexible communication technologies deliver content in both print and digital formats from the same data stream, automatically reformatting content for many supported delivery channels, like web, portal, messenger, email mobile or other. By enabling customers to view and manage their account information in real time, telecom companies are able to increase satisfaction and reduce process costs.

Supporting Regional Needs and Global Growth

DocOrigin supports complex multi-language and multi-currency requirements. One and the same template can create documents in different languages based on system configurations. This allows telecom companies to meet domestic requirements for providing communications in a customer’s preferred language or dialect, and to easily adapt customer communications management applications as the business grows and moves into new global territories with new language and regulatory requirements.

Many companies manufacture products that limit them to a single market, but at INOAC USA, President and CEO Chuck Little says, “We’re a little different from the rest.”

INOAC produces a wide variety of interior, exterior and functional parts, including polyurethanes, plastics, elastomers and advanced materials. This business model brings a lot of opportunities on one side and complex daily paperwork on the other side. On a daily basis, the employees of INOAC create documents related to the manufacturing, warehousing and logistics processes.

High-Performance Document Generation and Output Management

Inoac works with all major automotive players, such as BMW, FCA, Toyota, Honda, Ford, Volkswagen, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and more. At INOAC approximately 5,000 employees work in more than 100 locations worldwide. The company’s products are in use at over 5,300 manufacturers in 90 countries.

A solution to create multiple document types in one place.

After an extensive market research and proposals analysis process, the company chose DocOrigin for this mission. The solution made sense because of DocOrigin’s ability to not only meet, but also exceed ABC INOAC’s document related business requirements

  • DocOrigin made our job much easier in what was already a complex and mission-critical undertaking. The platform and the implementation team performed beyond our expectations.

The Solution

The automated template conversion tools from DocOrigin made their migration from the legacy to the new system transparent, easy and secure.

After a short training the INOAC team could migrate their old templates using DocOrigin, thereby reducing the service charges by tens of thousands of US-Dollars and empowering the company to create and edit templates in-house to respond to changes speedily.

Tight Integration

As this is a critical corporate production process, it was crucial for ABC INOAC that the new system could run with a high level of performance and reliability. DocOrigin is a versatile solution allowing to be tightly integrated and seamlessly working with Windows OS, QAD Enterprise Applications, Jetform IFD forms, Warehouse and Logistics systems without making any changes to these systems and business applications.

Automated Document Localization

As INOAC operates in more than 100 facilities worldwide, being used in thousands of manufacturing process, DocOrigin had to simplify a rather complex business environment. The new solution needed to handle documents in different languages, currencies and comply with relevant laws, policies, and regulations and had to work with the data previously generated for a competitive forms product. DocOrigin enabled the company to reduce template quantity by nearly 50% by creating smart templates with intelligent logic and rule-based automated distribution channel selection, which could be customized to the needs of a global manufacturing company. The result was a consolidation of the document template quantity by almost half and reducing document maintenance costs about 50%.

Business Process Optimization

DocOrigin brought the document related business process to a new level of security, compliance and professional quality. Not only are all the documents generated faster, but the system also ensures that only the latest approved template versions are used around the world, thereby reducing non-compliance risks, minimizing human error rates and facilitating brand integrity throughout the entire production stages.

Future Opportunities

Confident from the success of DocOrigin, INOAC intends to implement additional user-friendly modules. As such, the company will be able to offer internal non-technical users new functionality. The departments will be able to use pre-approved templates with pre-defined editable fields to create routine documents on an as-needed-basis. On one hand, it will enable INOAC to minimize document preparation time, and on the other hand it will also significantly reduce the human error rate. The employees will also be able to add dynamic notifications, collaborate in workflows, define document approval logics, and automatically sort & bundle generated documents before delivering them.
